Price £22,995 or £776 per month The individual Comet models are designed to give the maximum in terms of performance and upgradeability. Using the latest Harlequin RIP technology enables Comet users to RIP Adobe PDF files. Jerry Widdowson, Repro Technology’s Sales Director explains that system managers in recent installations have been rather surprised at what their Comet has been capable of:
“We recently installed a Comet in a company which had been using a Linotype RIP 50,” he says, “One job they had on a regular basis was causing production headaches as it took nearly three hours to run. We installed the Comet and the customer was amazed to find the entire job was RIPped and sent to the imagesetter in 112 seconds!” The Comet is designed to drive virtually every imagesetter on the market including: Scangraphic (all models), Ultre, Heidelberg/Linotype (all models including the Herkules, Quasar and SignaSetter), Agfa, Scitex and many more. The company also takes very seriously the traffic downstream of the RIP. They recently installed a Comet RIP in Wallington-based Burrows Communications. Burrows had requested help in overcoming production bottlenecks, however every company they contacted was only interested in supplying them with a new RIP and Imagesetter. Repro Technology looked at the whole network, which includes 25 Macintoshes and 20 PC’s and decided to split the network into two sections, with a 100base-T network and hub to increase the performance in the high resolution and scanning section. Rather than supply a new imagesetter, Repro Technology merely installed a Comet RIP to drive the company’s Agfa Accuset imagesetter. The Comet RIP was also connected directly to Burrows’ existing 60Gb server. This solution has greatly increased network and RIP performance for a fraction of the price of a new imagesetter.
Jerry Widdowson explains: “There are a lot of perfectly good imagesetters that are being thrown into skips simply because suppliers wish to sell the customer a new system, or are unprepared to upgrade the existing equipment.
