 Croydon-based pre-press integrator Repro Technology is using IPEX 98 to debut a new OPI/RIP server configuration called Comet Xtreme.The Comet Xtreme uses not one, but four Intel Xeon CPUs running at 400Mhz with 1Mb cache and over a Gigabyte of RAM memory. Up to 300Gigabytes of hard disk storage can be installed in hot-swappable drive bays.
The sheer size of the Xeon CPUs necessitates three large additional cooling fans to pass cold air over the new processors. The Comet Xtreme can be seen
in action at IPEX 98 on Repro Technology’s stand (127 in Hall 12). The
machine is so new that until last week it was still in Intel’s UK labs.
So what does all this mean for print and pre-press companies? The Comet RIP and OPI Server range offers the ultimate in high resolution picture handling coupled with a sophisticated Harlequin RIP, able to drive virtually any imagesetter on the market. “Many companies are forced into buying new imagesetters simply because their supplier does not see fit to upgrade their old RIP.“ Says Repro Technology’s Sales Director Jerry Widdowson. “We believe that many of these imagesetters are capable of high-quality film output and simply need better file-handling and a powerful modern RIP to extend their useful life.” If the registration, format or the resolutions available do make it inevitable that a new imagesetter is required, Repro Technology have a wide range of new and refurbished machines to choose from. Intel Xeon is the latest and fastest CPU from Intel, the world’s largest
manufacturer of microprocessors; it is designed specifically for the high-end
server market. Intel Pentium II based servers can only support 2 CPUs,
but eight Xeons can be installed on one motherboard with up to 4 Gigabytes
of RAM.
